TSIBILI, Georgia –
On Sept. 27, 1993, Sokhumi was captured by forces backed by Russia. This tragic event led to the loss of thousands of lives and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. We commemorate this anniversary with deep sadness. To honor the memory of those who lost their lives, the Chargé D’ Affaires Alan Purcell, U.S. military representatives, and members of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Georgia placed a wreath at Heroes Square.
