TSIBILI, Georgia –
United States Ambassador to Georgia, Kelly C. Degnan, Chief of DTRA-Eurasia, Lt. Col. Dobner and members of the United States Army Research Directorate-Georgia (USAMRD-G), rendered honors at the Georgian Veterans Memorial in Heroes Square, Tbilisi Sept. 27.
To commemorate the 29th Anniversary of the Fall of Sokhumi the ambassador and US Soldiers re-affirmed the strong bonds of friendship and enduring support between the people of the United States and Georgia.
Historically, Sept. 27th marks the annual remembrance of the Sukhumi Massacre of 1993 and the subsequent fall of Abkhazia to Russia-backed forces. The day is widely observed as the Georgian equivalent of the USA’s Veterans’ Day. USAMRD-G Soldiers and U.S. Embassy leadership have performed a formal wreath laying ceremony at the memorial for the last seven consecutive years to honor Georgian veterans, the memories of the thousands who fell, and the survivors.
